Singaporeans know about Chek Jawa - a small stretch of inter-tidal flats on the eastern edge of Pulau Ubin, a small island to the north-east of Singapore that is now being turned into a recreation island for families and young people keen on nature and outdoor activities. People here also know that Chek Jawa nearly disappeared because of a plan to reclaim land from the sea. Thankfully, Chek Jawa was saved by people who fought for it to remain as it is - a natural heritage where Singaporeans could get to enjoy the wonders of the sea in between tidal changes at specific times in the month. I wonder if the day will come when Singaporeans will unite to save our land and our earth from pollution. All it takes is for every family to make the concious effort to reecycle papers, plastics, bottles and aluminium cans just once or twice a month and we will be doing the earth immeasurable good. Today, we may have saved Chek Jawa but tomorrow does not guarantee that it will not be lost to land reclamation because our garbage is taking up too much precious space. All the best, Ria.
Hi Mable,
I am glad you resume to the posting.
I just started my part-time teaching at NUS for 4th year and graduate student on Environmental subject. I will introduce your blog to them next Tuesday. There are 33 Undergraduate and 30 graduate students and I hope some of them will visit this blog.
BTW, My wife Hee Meen has been talking for a long time where we wanted to bring our two boys Jit Ping(JP) and Jit Shen (JS) to visit Chek Jawa but the schedulee were fully booked. Will ask her to try booking.
CHeer
Keep blogging.
Marvin
Thanks Ria and Marvin for your coments. I am thrilled that there is an interest in my post on Chek Jawa and I hope that more people will comment on my blog as this gives me the motivation to keep the blog up to date. Marvin, you really must go to Chek Jawa. I found out that Ria is the author of the Chek Jawa Guide and I have communicated with her through email. Do visit her website as it is really fantastic and make sure you show the photos on Chek Jawa to your wife, kids and students. You will want to go there immediately. Cheers!
Hi Mabel,
I am one of Marvin's students. I was glad he introduced the blog to us. Ive been wondering what to do with my hp cartridges. I have 5 of them which Ive been keeping since last year! I nearly threw them away just this week, because I thought I will never get around to recycling them. HOHO now I know they can bring me some income. =).
Ive been to chek jawa once (Ria was the guide! I rem "Dont step on the carpet anemones!") and I lurve the place. Thats why I hope never to go back again. I rather leave it undisturbed. =)
Hi SY,
Welcome to my blog and thank you for your comment.I am glad you came and found something of value or rather how to convert something to monetary value. Actually we should thank Marvin. Yes,we were also reminded by our Chek Jawa guide not to stray away from the designated trial and that every step we take results in countless fatalities beneath our feet. I wish I could go back some day to learn more about this environment so that maybe I may be able to contribute somehow to its preservation. Cheers :-)
Dear ALL
I am gald that we met in such a "strange" environment.
Yes, Hee Meen is checking on the CJ web and we might have to go there w/o any guide.
BTW GONG XI FA CAI & NIAN NAIN GAO SHEN to ALL
Marvin
